We’re currently in a series entitled “Identity Theft” at church. Various topics about how the world robs us of who we are supposed to be in Christ. For example, last week was on “Mugged By the Mirror” and how we’re enslaved by image of our own expectations and those placed on us by others.
This week is on guilt and how God comes to deliver us from the guilt of our lives and forgive us of our sins.
Here’s our worship set:
- Special Song: “The Freshmen” by Verve Pipe
- Special Song: “East to West” by Casting Crowns
- Worship: “Hungry”
- Worship: “The Power of Your Love”
- Worship: “Trading My Sorrows”
- Closing Song: “The Difference”
Here are the lyrics to “The Freshmen”. For our topic of guilt, I think it fits very well with the message of the sermon.
When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I’m guilt stricken, sobbin’ with my head on the floor
Stop a baby’s breath and a shoe full of rice, no…I can’t be held responsible
‘Cause she was touching her face
I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first placeFor the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmenMy best friend took a week’s vacation to forget her
His girl took a week’s worth of valium and slept
And now he’s guilt stricken sobbin’ with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he saysI can’t be held responsible
‘Cause she was touching her face
I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first placeFor the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmenWe’ve tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we’re guilt stricken sobbin’ with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we’d sayI can’t be held responsible
‘Cause she was touching her face
And I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first placeFor the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmenFor the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmenWe were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen
We were only freshmen
How did worship go for you today? What was included with your worship experience today? What’s worship like at your church? Do you ever include a “secular” song in your services? Why or why not?
