Someone recently asked me what my favorite “religious” song was. I didn’t really prefer that naming of a “Christian” song, but I obviously knew what they meant by the question. As I thought about it, my first thought was to not choose one of the current favorites because how can a recent song be my all time favorite? That led me to thinking about songs I enjoyed when I was much younger and growing up. Nothing really stood out to me as an all time favorite still. I then thought about the great hymns that were sung in church as I was growing up: AmazingRead More →

For whatever reason today we ended up popping a cassette tape into the player and started listening to some old-school southern gospel music at the office. What made it even more interesting is that the cassette was homemade from an actual vinyl album. That gave us the full effect of the almost incoherent scratching sound in the album. I grew up in a little town in Kentucky and my dad was the pastor of a small country church. Whenever we would have musical groups for concerts, there were almost always a southern gospel group or quartet. That style of music is not something I wouldRead More →

Does this kind of music and video do anything for you? It’s nicely done. It’s good music. Nice video footage. But does it inspire you? What if they showed it in your church on Sunday? Just curious.Read More →

I’m not saying that because I think it’s right, it’s just the biggest target demographic for Christian Music right now, and that just isn’t right. I hadn’t really thought about it much and for many of the same reasons that Russ Breimeier with ChristianityToday does as well. Russ shares in a recent e-mail newsletter the following: Traditionally, Christian music radio is targeted to mothers between the age of 35 and 44. Does that sit right with you? It doesn’t with me. Not because so-called “soccer moms” are enjoying Christian music so much. After all, they’re the primary influence on what their children listen to atRead More →

iTunes takes a minute to recognize the roots of Christian pop/hip-hop music by saluting some of the founding fathers. They solute DC Talk and their 10-year Anniversay. iTunes celebrates the 10th Anniversary edition of dc Talk’s Jesus Freak  with a look at the band’s essential albums, solo projects from band members tobyMac and Kevin Max, and an exploration of the mark they’ve made on the landscape of contemporary Christian music. One thing I will say that irritates me about iTunes, there is no website. You have to open the iTunes software to get any of the information. That’s just annoying.Read More →
