A recent article on The Unofficial Apple Weblog states that if you’re a musician and your music isn’t available on iTunes, then you don’t matter. Can this really be true? I understand that massive marketing and audience impact of having your information on iTunes, but to say iTunes is the Holy Grail of the music industry and they hold the key to being accepted is a little strong don’t you think? How does this type of information impact Christian artists? What if you’re on iTunes, but you’re buried in separate levels of genres or lists, is it still worth the impact? I’ve been listening to the Scribe Music Show for a few days now and have to say I really enjoy his podcast. He’s introduced me to some artists that sound great and really could be mainstream. I was concerned initially about the sound quality of the music and “finish” of the songs by the artists, but these are really great songs and bands. Trevor does a great job of introducing the songs and talking a little bit about each group. I got the impression that he really knows his stuff and has actually built some relationships with the various groups he highlights. Many of themRead More →

Are you a Christian or Mainstream Music Artist

My recent post about my thoughts on Collective Soul and reading some articles discussed on Christianity Today I thought I’d propose a question to you the readers. Does a Christian who sings have to be promoted as a “Christian” artist? Are they less of a Christian if they sing in a secular group? Why do we have to have these labels? Do the labels mean anything more than the difference between a blues genre and jazz? Am I less of a Christian because I enjoy listening to music and albums sold in the “New Age” section of music stores? I know my mother didn’t reallyRead More →

I received an e-mail a few weeks back introducing me to an aspiring, independent artist named Sean Dietrich. With my recent trip to New Orleans, specifically the 14-hour drive down and back, I had the opportunity to listen through the various songs that are available on his website at www.seandietrich.com I am writing regarding an exciting and talented new Christian singer/songwriter.  His passionate and loving testimony shines vividly through his music!  If you believe in following hard after God and the No Compromise ministries of Keith Green, Matthew Ward, or Randy Stonehill, you will love Sean Dietrich. The similarities to Keith Green are dead on!Read More →

I just saw an ad for this CD that’s coming out. It’s a Gotee Records tribute to the music of DC Talk, specifically their “Jesus Freak” album. If you liked this album and are a CCM fan today, you should definitely pick-up this CD. It’s all of the original songs on the “Jesus Freak” album performed by current artists. If you’ve already got this album, let me know what you think.Read More →
