Every good story has that element that seems to reel you in, excited to see what happens next. When you read a good book, its a page turner. When you watch that movie that has twists and turns in the plot, it keeps you guessing. Sometimes it’s that favorite show that has you in suspense for the next episode. We all love stories and they’re happening all around us every day.  Life is like a story. There are seasons to your story. Sometimes it’s the good part where the guy gets the girl or the underdog wins out over the bully. The ending, in thoseRead More →

When we were living and serving a church in Michigan, Keri and I felt our hearts stirring to adopt. After some clarity, we flew to Africa to meet our son, William, who is 12 yrs old now. If you’ve met him, you’ve seen the face of pure joy. His smile and his laugh are infectious. When we accepted a call to lead a church in Tennessee, some friends of ours (actually living in the south) expressed concerns. “Are you worried about having a black son and living in the south?” My first reaction was shock, but my response was measured. “No. I’m not worried. Have you ever known the person that never seems to have anything good to say? You know that person; they just seem to drain the mood of everyone in the room? You came to work today and the conversation just took a strange turn; you planned to be in a good mood, but the people around you planned otherwise. I get it. I knew a guy in college that could suck the life out of the room in a matter of minutes. It wasn’t that he wasn’t a good guy, he just didn’t have a good perspective on things. We would often look at eachRead More →

Photo Credit: jeepersmedia on flickr I stole a pack of Big League Chew when I was 8 years old. In my defense, it was the grape flavor (especially hard to find at the time). Before my dad made me confess to the clerk at the convenience store, I had to spit out the big wad of gum in my mouth. Which was really fine with me because by the time we got back to the store, the flavor was gone and started to hurt my jaw. After a few minutes, that stuff was like chewing glue!  Sin is like that; it tastes sweet at first, but after a while itRead More →

We’ve all heard them…the questions of a child. Why do toes look so funny? Why is that called a giraffe? When will I get tall?  We’ve all asked them.  But do you remember getting answers for your questions? When we were young and were given an answer by someone who loved and cared about us, we just believed it.  Most of us face difficulties every day.  Some of you don’t like your job.  Some of you live in a constant state of turmoil in your home.  Others of you are trying to figure out how to put one foot in front of the other after aRead More →
