I just read an article about Christian music being too compartmentalized and boxed into narrow niches and genres.
The author remembered a time when you could listen to the radio and hear a wide variety of artists across what would be a variety of stations and genres today.
Suffice it to say, our collective understanding of Christian music today is much narrower than it was 10 years ago. Much of that comes from the specialization of radio. And I understand that things change with time, yet I can’t shake this nagging feeling that the industry today is less interested in reflecting the diversity of Christ’s Kingdom than it is in promoting the niches within the niche. But can we ever go back to the old way, and more importantly, do people actually want to?
Could it be that some of my frustration with hearing the same music over and over on the radio is due to the music being too boxed into tiny niches within Christian music?
Can we get back to hearing Christian music across genres on a single station? Are we too divided even amongst ourselves? What’s the best way to experience and find new Christian music? What about new Christian music out of your normal genre?
