Kim recently shared her thoughts about a Chris Rice song on her blog, Swingset Reflections. The title of the song is “Life Means So Much” and comes from his “Smell the Color 9” album. This is another song that I’ve heard before, but never really paid as close attention to the lyrics as I have now that Kim has pointed them out.
Life Means So Much by Chris Rice
Every day is a journal page
Every man holds a quill and ink
And there’s plenty of room for writing in
All we do is believe and think
So will you compose a curse
Or will today bring the blessing
Fill the page with rhyming verse
Or some random sketchingTeach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
That somehow our souls forgot
Life means so much
Life means so much
Life means so muchEvery day is a bank account
And time is our currency
So nobody’s rich, nobody’s poor
We get 24 hours each
So how are you gonna spend
Will you invest, or squander
Try to get ahead
Or help someone who’s underTeach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
That somehow our souls forgot
Life means so much
Life means so much
Life means so muchHas anybody ever lived who knew the value of a life
And don’t you think giving is all
What proves the worth of yours and mineTeach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
That somehow our souls forgot
Life means so muchEvery day is a gift you’ve been given
Make the most of the time every minute you’re living
Wow! How powerful is that! And something I definitely get caught up in very easily. As Kim pointed out in her post, the verse I bolded above hits true to me. I was reminded again this evening of just how much I’m continually trying to cash in my “currency of time” to get as much done as possible. The challenge to balance spending time and loving my family with spending time working and providing for my family is a constant struggle for me.
Thanks Kim for making me read and listen to these lyrics like I’ve never done before.
