It’s a natural tendency for us to fast forward to the worst case scenario. When we get bad test results, look at our bank accounts or just live in regret, all of us have felt the like weight of the world is on our shoulders…or in our hands.  I was grocery shopping at a store that has a scale as you enter and leave. You know those old school scales, the kind with the large face with the arrow that turns like a dial? As I was leaving the store, I decided to weigh myself. Of course, the scale was completely wrong! I couldn’t possiblyRead More →

Have you ever faced something really hard? I think all of us have. Sunday night, Keri and I started our drive to a friend’s house near the hospital where our youngest son would have a procedure to repair his heart. It was quiet and I reached over to hold Keri’s hand. Soon I noticed the tears. She said, “I don’t want to do this.” It’s like the feeling of entering dark woods. We knew the next few days would be tough, and we hoped it wouldn’t be as hard as our minds made it, praying we would find the strength to endure. It’s a newRead More →

Keri & I were sitting outside last week, drinking our coffee. It was a strange morning. The sun was shining brightly but the air was cold. She looked at me & said, “This is how I feel, too. The sun feels good, it’s warm…you almost forget what the temperature is but then the wind blows & reminds me…it’s cold.” It was a difficult week. I’m sure you’ve had them as well. Life can seem like a cold wind, chilling you to the bone. And if you rely on the wind to tell you how you feel, well, you’ll always be cold. But, if you closeRead More →

Over the years I’ve heard countless people tell me they want to be in “God’s will.” They search and search for it…as if it’s hiding somewhere. Most times I see people toiling away at life, hoping they find God in some sort of cosmic game of hide and seek. But what if you were in God’s will and all this time you’ve been focused on the wrong things? The ‘if only’ mentality is killing us. The ‘I should have…’ is simply regret. The ‘If life was different I would…’ is just the blame game. You have one life to live and you have today toRead More →

Be close to me, Lord. Help me to see You.  These words have been on my mind lately. I hold them close to my chest, clinging to them as if they were a prized possession. I repeat them in the middle of the night as I pray for the needs of the people in my care. I recite them over and over again, reminding myself that God is at work. I believe He is, just not always in the way we think. To say “God is working” often implies that we don’t have any responsibility to take action. I know this isn’t always the case,Read More →
