When we were living and serving a church in Michigan, Keri and I felt our hearts stirring to adopt. After some clarity, we flew to Africa to meet our son, William, who is 12 yrs old now. If you’ve met him, you’ve seen the face of pure joy. His smile and his laugh are infectious. When we accepted a call to lead a church in Tennessee, some friends of ours (actually living in the south) expressed concerns. “Are you worried about having a black son and living in the south?” My first reaction was shock, but my response was measured. “No. I’m not worried. I’m…awareRead More →

There’s a worship song that’s been ringing in my head for the last week. We sang it together in my church last week. It’s essentially the same thing as “Jesus Loves Me This I Know…” But the truth is there’s really no better theology (the study of religious faith, practice, and experience) than this;  Jesus Loves You. Two things and then I’ll let you go; God loves you no matter what. You cannot escape His love. I used to tell my youth groups; “We love you and there’s nothing you can do about it.” You can’t shake that love. Even if you don’t want it,Read More →

Love Gives Itself Away

When I officiate a wedding, I tend to use some of the same language. Last year, there were 14 weddings. I almost have that section memorized! I use some of the same language because it’s important. I also believe it isn’t just for married couples. See if this is useful to you… Love isn’t romance or harmony or peace. Those are byproducts of love. Love is faithfulness to God, then each other. You can’t give what you don’t have. But that is the goal of love…giving. Giving itself away.  When I was 20, I was selfish. I didn’t realize how selfish I was until we hadRead More →

The opinions expressed are that of the writer and may not reflect your own personal feelings regarding content. Reader discretion is advised. Valentine’s Day is one that I’ve never really gotten. Don’t get me wrong, when I met my wife we even attended a college sponsored banquet. The “Butterfly Kisses” guy was there…pre “Butterfly” fame. Look, I like any excuse for people to express their love for each other but it tends to be, at least for me, an odd holiday. As my kids get older, I try to tell them things that I hope they’ll remember – sayings, quips and nuggets of wisdom thatRead More →

A friend of mine that’s a youth pastor in Ohio recently had this post and included this Casting Crowns video below of their song “Does Anybody Hear Her” After seeing this group in concert, I can honestly say that it wasn’t a concert at all but a worship service. I love the ministry that Casting Crowns does and equips others to do as well. Who do you see? Who’s paths do you cross everyday and never notice? May we all be challenged to actually share God’s love with people instead of just talking about the love of God that can be there’s if they’ll acceptRead More →
