I’ve got to be honest, even after growing up in Kentucky and living in Nashville, TN for a while, I’ve never been much of a country music fan. There are a couple of groups and singers that I can enjoy some of their songs, but generally I’m not a country music fan.
However, one singer that I really changed my opinion of is Johnny Cash and that’s actually because of the movie “Walk the Line” with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. I’m not sure if that says much about me or the movie, but it doesn’t change the fact that the movie really introduced me more to Johnny Cash and his songs, and I liked most of them.
I recently received two DVD’s of “The Johnny Cash Christmas Special” for 1976 and 1977. When these originally were shown I was just a toddler and wouldn’t have appreciated them anyway.
After my new found respect and admiration for Johnny Cash though, these were interesting in watching and enjoying some songs that I do have memories of growing up. Of course with it being a Christmas special, there are plenty of holiday songs that have been given a new treatment for me with my overall inexperience with country music.
There are plenty of special guest appearances and cameos from people through the two DVD’s. People like: Tony Orlando, Roy Clark, Merle Travis, Barbara Mandrell, The Statler Brothers, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis. There’s even a telling of The Story of Christmas by Billy Graham on the 1976 DVD.
The DVD’s are available from ShoutFactory.com. You can also go to their website to see all the songs and artists that perform on each DVD. For more information about The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1976 and The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1977 just click on the title of each above to be taken to the information page for each on ShoutFactory.com’s website.
Are you interested in having this two DVD set for your own? I’d love to give them away to a Christian Music Fan reader like yourself. All you need to do is write a short entry in the comments or on your own blog post (give us a link in the comments) telling us about your favorite Christmas memory growing up as a child. I’ll choose the winner and send the DVD’s on their way.
