It’s a natural tendency for us to fast forward to the worst case scenario. When we get bad test results, look at our bank accounts or just live in regret, all of us have felt the like weight of the world is on our shoulders…or in our hands.  I was grocery shopping at a store that has a scale as you enter and leave. You know those old school scales, the kind with the large face with the arrow that turns like a dial? As I was leaving the store, I decided to weigh myself. Of course, the scale was completely wrong! I couldn’t possiblyRead More →

There’s a worship song that’s been ringing in my head for the last week. We sang it together in my church last week. It’s essentially the same thing as “Jesus Loves Me This I Know…” But the truth is there’s really no better theology (the study of religious faith, practice, and experience) than this;  Jesus Loves You. Two things and then I’ll let you go; God loves you no matter what. You cannot escape His love. I used to tell my youth groups; “We love you and there’s nothing you can do about it.” You can’t shake that love. Even if you don’t want it,Read More →

I was scrolling through some news feeds last week. It was filled with arguments. From fellow pastors to celebrity talking heads, everyone was arguing their point. They all wanted to be heard, but more importantly, they wanted to be right. I happened to be with my good friend, and fellow pastor, Erik. We were talking about the current climate of the world, the church, and our fellow church leaders. He said, “If half of those people would just stop arguing about everything, get out from behind their computers and do something, it would change their perspective!” I agreed and said something that I’ve been thinkingRead More →

When I officiate a wedding, I tend to use some of the same language. Last year, there were 14 weddings. I almost have that section memorized! I use some of the same language because it’s important. I also believe it isn’t just for married couples. See if this is useful to you… Love isn’t romance or harmony or peace. Those are byproducts of love. Love is faithfulness to God, then each other. You can’t give what you don’t have. But that is the goal of love…giving. Giving itself away.  When I was 20, I was selfish. I didn’t realize how selfish I was until we hadRead More →

Have you ever faced something really hard? I think all of us have. Sunday night, Keri and I started our drive to a friend’s house near the hospital where our youngest son would have a procedure to repair his heart. It was quiet and I reached over to hold Keri’s hand. Soon I noticed the tears. She said, “I don’t want to do this.” It’s like the feeling of entering dark woods. We knew the next few days would be tough, and we hoped it wouldn’t be as hard as our minds made it, praying we would find the strength to endure. It’s a newRead More →
