You’ve heard people say “sink or swim” right? Usually, you hear it when people talk about life. Get in the pool and make a decision to either sink to the bottom of the pool or swim to the other side; one means success and the other means failure. But let me tell you what I see more often than those; treading water. I grew up most of my years in Orlando, FL. Surfing came naturally. I had good balance and if you get a long board you can pretty much catch any wave no matter how small. Inevitably, there was always someone that thoughtRead More →

Whenever Keri and I are asked for parenting advice, I’ve always responded with the same statement, “Let them eat ice cream and buy good laundry detergent.” Here’s what I mean… There will be times when life seems overwhelming. No question. But in those moments, try to picture kids eating ice cream…they haven’t a care in the world. And because they are care free, there is undoubtedly sticky goodness running down their hands and onto their clothes. Here’s the deal. Let it happen. It’s fine.Throw it in the washer with confidence. Nothing so trivial is worth losing your mind over. Last night Emmett, who we wereRead More →

Spring is in the air and that means bbq grilling, outside parties and field day at school. By the way, field day is code for “there’s nothing left to do in the classroom so let’s take them outside so we don’t strangle them”. It’s an excuse to have a party outside!  Another party I enjoy is graduation.  It’s not so much the formality of the commencement (although that’s pretty neat), but it’s the end. I like seeing the graduates walk across the stage, receive their diplomas and then see their supporters lose their minds rejoicing. As each person walks and greets the school principal orRead More →

It happens to all of us. We hear something or do something that makes us feel “less than” something or someone else. I think it’s normal. I think it’s part of living with other human beings. But sometimes it’s hard to get over feeling like you’re in someone’s shadow. At some point in our lives, we participate in a dangerous game of measuring ourselves against the wrong things. When we do this, we begin to feel small. Feeling small makes you feel insignificant. And that, I believe, grieves the heart of God.  The Psalmist writes a great prescription for feeling small. Psalm 139:13-16 says thatRead More →

Going Green

Keri and I are doing our part to be environmentally friendly. Years ago, we had a garden & Keri decided to use a compost bin. Composting is the decomposition of plant and food remains (and other once-living materials) to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is great for enriching garden soil. It’s a step in reducing landfills. This whole “green” thing started when Bailee (our eldest) was little and started asking questions. She’s been known to block a sidewalk so a worm can make it safely across. We were limited with the things we could do, but we knew we could do something, henceRead More →
