There’s immense value in finding folks who will love you through your “stuff,” people who know there’s more to your life than simply one moment in time. I was reminded this morning of that gift. Most of you know that I struggled as a teenager. I was trying to find my fit…I was listless. My parents, my church and my friends felt helpless. There was a couple in our church that worked with the youth group. They went on trips, they taught Sunday School and had students at their house, perpetually. They invested in tons of people. I’m just one of those people; one of theirRead More →

Last weekend was incredible. We had record number of people through our doors on Easter Day  (422 to be exact – not too shabby for our little neck of the woods) as our celebration came at the end of a long Lenten season. Good Friday was one for our memories. But before our services, the three other pastors I serve with, along with our jail ministry leaders, experienced a remarkable grace. They served communion in the county jail. As I listened to them recount the experience this morning, I wanted to share my thoughts with you. When we share the elements of communion within ourRead More →

Keri & I were sitting outside last week, drinking our coffee. It was a strange morning. The sun was shining brightly but the air was cold. She looked at me & said, “This is how I feel, too. The sun feels good, it’s warm…you almost forget what the temperature is but then the wind blows & reminds me…it’s cold.” It was a difficult week. I’m sure you’ve had them as well. Life can seem like a cold wind, chilling you to the bone. And if you rely on the wind to tell you how you feel, well, you’ll always be cold. But, if you closeRead More →

Remembering

Holy week is fastly approaching. It’s a time of remembering. It’s a time that the church sets aside to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. He was, and is, the sacrifice for sin. But let me tell you this; He wasn’t just a good man. He had compassion on people. Yes, He loved. He laughed and ate with friends because He was human. He felt sorrow when others hurt. He cried when his friend died. But there is something more to this good man, He held the power of sin and death in His hands and He robbed it. He took away the end-zone victory danceRead More →

You Count

Every decade the government takes a census. I’m sure it’s an absolute nightmare to gather all the data that make up the 125 million households in this country. My politician friends tell me that being counted for the census is vital in bringing funding for schools, hospitals and senior centers. I suppose it’s important to fill out the form correctly but when the form came to our house I thought, “Paperwork equals details”, then I asked Keri to fill it out. It made me think…you are more than just a number in a survey. You are a uniquely designed individual, more than a statistic. ButRead More →
